When I click on a Friend in my list and it says "You appear online to this contact", can my friend see me?

When I click on a Friend in my list and it says "You appear online to this contact", does that mean my friend knows I'm online and hasn't deleted me? I've sent a buddy several IMs but get no response. I just wanted to know he knows I'm online.
