Are Horror movies becoming more gory than scary?

I never been big into Horror, but I enjoy some of the old black n white films, because the were creepy, and had suspense, with out any gore. I look at the trailers for todays horror films, your Saws, House of a 1000 corpses, Dawn of the dead remake etc, and it seems that for the most part, its more gore than anything. Heads being split open, stabbings, decaptiations, torture scenes, **** like that is become more and more the back bone of horror. Is Horror more gore based than ever now?
